MATT'S TOP TEN MOVIES OF 1999!
|
10) A SIMPLE PLAN
(This selection and the one that follows actually came out in 1998, but they didn't come to New Orleans until this year,
so therefore, they're on this year's list.) I'm not a big Billy Bob Thornton fan, but his performance--and Bill Paxton's and
Bridget Fonda's in this film were outstanding.
9) CENTRAL STATION
I can not understand how Fernanda Montenegro did not win EVERY acting award they give out for her performance
in this wonderful movie from Brazil.
8) RUN LOLA RUN
I don't know if good editing equates to a good movie, but this is one of the most cleverly put together movies I've ever
seen.
7) COOKIE'S FORTUNE
Look! A movie about people from Batesville!
6) THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY
Great movie, but I have one minor question: Why did the English guy (who didn't know his scam) get killed, and Cate
Blanchett (who did) get spared? Just wondering. If you have an idea, let me know.
5) GO!
Like Run Lola Run, it may be more clever than good, but it's very clever and actually features some excellent
performances from young actors.
4) ELECTION
Considering that Matthew Broderick was the high-school know-it-all in "Ferris Beuller's Day Off", it's nice to see him get
his comeuppance here. I would almost swear that Reese Witherspoon went to my high school.
3) AN IDEAL HUSBAND
Sometimes you just enjoy watching actors act. Cate Blanchett, Jeremy Northam, Rupert Everett and Minnie Driver were
delightful to watch, and Julianne Moore was the most seductive villainess of the year.
2) THE SIXTH SENSE
At a time when lots of films run out of steam at the end, this one saves its best punch for last. Easily Bruce WIllis's
best work.
1) DOGMA
The most thought-provoking film of the year and one of the funniest. Linda Fiorentino, Chris Rock, Janeane Garofalo,
Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Salma Hayek, Silent Bob, Alanis Morrisette as God--I loved them all. Lose the s*** demon,
and we're talking the top ten list of all time.
Honorable Mention:
EVEREST was the best thing I've ever seen in an IMAX theater. Also, the first hour of FIGHT CLUB was probably the best
beginning of a film I've ever seen. Sadly, it went really bad really fast.
Disclaimer: These might not have been the ten "best" films, and they're certainly not the ten "top" films of the year. They're just the ones I SAW during the year and liked the most.
Enjoy!
